Information About Hemorrhoids
Posted Under: General
Hemroids can be a somewhat funny disorder and it’s true that late night TV hosts sometimes work jokes about them into their routine. And while it’s true that hemroids might not be the worst thing that could happen to a person, it can cause itching, anal bleeding and in some more extreme cases a great deal of pain and discomfort.
If you do have itching, discomfort when using the bathroom, blood on the toilet paper or in the fecal material or any pain in the anal area, you may potentially have a hemroid condition, but a medical exam is necessary to rule out any potentially more dangerous conditions. With either a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy, your doctor can see what potential problems you may have with your colon. Looking at the whole bowel is a colonoscopy and an sigmoidoscopy involves only the last couple feet of bowel.
I don’t think a colonoscopy is anyone’s idea of fun, yet it is a necessary exam to make sure you stay healthy. Plus, it is a safe and easy process. Yearly colonoscopys are usually given to people starting at age fifty but those of us with a history of colon disorders running in our family need to get screened ten years earlier. When the first colon viewing is done, if the colon looks healthy, another exam won’t be needed for five years. The day before the colon exam when a heavy laxative is prescribed is the most difficult part of the process. Since the colon needs to be empty before the anal exam, a laxative is sometimes given by the doctor. With this treatment, it is best if you take a day off work because you will be cleaning out your entire system. Now that the hard part is out of the way, you get to be sedated through the procedure itself.
With a quick trip to the doctor, you can easily rule out some of the potentially more dangerous causes of your discomfort. These can include colon cancer, polyps, rectal cancer, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis which are inflammatory bowel diseases. Some other conditions causing anal discomfort might be anal fissures or anal abscesses. Hemroids can give patients the same problems that other colon diseases can, so it’s important to have a complete exam to know exactly what your dealing with.
Since hemorrhoid conditions are much more common than the other medical conditions, it is more likely than not that your diagnosis will be hemorrhoids, but a doctor’s visit is necessary before you start any hemroid treatment. For such an easy procedure, a colonoscopy give can you both good health and less worry.
